Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego was established by Serafin Paredes in 2001. In 2003 Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego became the first and only non-profit mariachi in San Diego. This mariachi is comprised of young men and women that come together to learn about their culture, perform music that they enjoy, and go on educational trips.
The goal of the director Mr. Paredes, is to encourage his students to finish high school and continue their education. To help the students accomplish this goal they receive a small scholarship once they graduate high school and have participated in Maraichi Juvenil de San Diego for a minimum of two years. Former and current members of this mariachi have continued their education at learning institutes such as, San Diego City Collge, San Diego Mesa College, Southwestern College, San Diego State University, University of California San Diego, University of San Diego, George Mason University, and Stanford University.
Being a non-profit, Maraichi Juvenil de San Diego performs at public and private events to raise money to go on educational trips, and to purchase necessary equipment for the members such as trajes de charros, instruments, and music. Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego has gone on trips to places such as San Juan Capistrano California, Los Angeles California, Tucson Arizona, Albuquerque New Mexico, Tijuana Baja California Mexico, and Guadalajara Jalisco.
In 2004 Mr. Paredes founded the annual Mariachi Conference in San Diego. This conference consists of workshops, a showcase, and a concert. The workshops are classes where mariachi students learn traditional mariachi music taught by professional mariachi musicians. The students are placed into classes according to instrument and level. Throughout the years this conference has grown to include national and international students.
